HSS Ground Thread Taps
Standard Hand Or Short Machine Taps
These Taps have straight flutes and can be supplied with a taper lead (9 threads) or a second lead (5 threads) or a plug lead (11/2) threads. For had tapping, sets of three taps often required, each set comprising a taper, second and plug tap. Although commonly referred to as hand taps, they are equally suitable for machine tapping with a second or a plug lead.
Quick Spiral Taps
Used for machine tapping blind holes in most materials, the design of the flutes forces swarf back out of the hole rather than letting it build in the hole. Only recommended for sizes 1/8 to 1” diameter.
Spiral Point Taps
For machine tapping of through holes in most materials, they are particularly suitable for ductile materials and free machining steels. They can often be run as faster speeds. ….
Fluteless Taps
These taps function by displacing material (like a thread rolling die) and do not produce chips. They are suitable for machine tapping for ductile materials or free machining steels, but are only recommended for thread sizes up to ½ diameter

Long Shank Machine Taps
These taps are used for long reach tapping purposes and always have a shank smaller than the thread diameter. Normally supplied with the same number of flutes as the straight flute short machine or hand tap. They have replaced the nut tap shown below which in recent years has more often been used as a tap for long reach purposes than as a nut tap. Only supplied as standard with C.N.C., U.N.F. and I.S.O. Metric threads.
Nut Taps
Although rapidly becoming obsolete, these taps are occasionally used for tapping production runs of nuts. They have been largely made obsolete by the development of bent shank nut taps for use on special purpose nut tapping machines. They are normally supplied with a length of lead 2/3 of the tap thread length, but can be supplied
